Pinus sylvestrus
Scots Pine
Height from soil: 22"
Collected in April, 1988 along the northern Lake Michigan shore. This pine was one of many planted as seedlings during World War II by family friends as a method to control erosion. The trees, which were planted in pure sand, never achieved adult stature. Instead, they spread like low shrubs, being repeatedly broken and bent by the weight of piling snow.
For a detailed discussion of this and other trees collected from this site see the January/February, 1991 issue of Bonsai Magazine, the official publication of Bonsai Clubs International.
